Results of Stockholm III trial

A study of optimal fractionation schedule of preoperative radiotherapy in resectable rectal cancer was published in February 2017 in Lancet Oncology. The authors conclude that delaying surgery after short course radiotherapy gives similar results as immediate surgery after short course radiotherapy.Long course radiotherapy with delay is similar to both short course regimens(with and without delay) but prolongs treatment duration considerably.Postoperative complications were reduced in shortcourse radiotherapy and delayed surgery versus immediate surgery. The authors suggest short course radiotherapy with delayed surgery(after 4 to 8 weeks of 5 x 5 Gy radiotherapy) versus immediate(within 1 week of 5x 5 Gy radiotherapy).
